Open a new Excel Instance

You may have experienced an issue where you've left the Wizard to validate and upload large amounts of data and it's reporting the progress in a 'Processing' form.  This design deliberately prevents users from accidentally aborting upload sessions by clicking in other areas of the same worksheet.

However on Excel 2013, you will be unable to use different sessions of Excel at the same time as the 'Processing' form is open.

To be able to continue working in Excel while a Wizard is uploading, you must open the subsequent sessions of Excel in new instances.

With Excel 2013, the default you have is to create a new window within the existing Excel process.  In order to force the creation of a separate instance of the Excel process, you have these options:

·         From the command prompt, run EXCEL /X and you will open Excel window as a new instance.  The /X command switch forces the creation of a new instance.

·         Right click on the Excel tab in Windows taskbar keeping the ALT key pressed.  And without releasing the ALT key, click on ‘Microsoft Excel 2013’ option from the context menu. Excel will ask you if you require opening Excel as a new instance.  You must select YES.
Note - You cannot use this technique to open an existing document - you have to create the new Excel process first, and then open the existing workbook from there.

If the user lets go of the Alt key too early, it will "forget" the initial Alt press and continue in the same Excel session.  The user has to hold the Alt key until the prompt window is opened.
Alternatively, create a shortcut to Excel.  Right click on the short-cut and click Properties. Under the 'Shortcut' tab, add -x to the target. e.g.  "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office 15\root\office15\EXCEL.EXE" -x
